INFORMM YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD 2020 PRESENTATION CEREMONY

19 May 2021 - The Young Scientist Award 2020 was presented to three well-deserving students who demonstrated outstanding qualities in academic and research achievements. Their contributions to INFORMM and USM through awards, fellowship and other activities did not go unnoticed. The winners were selected from other applicants by a panel of lecturers.

The proud recipients were Dr Lew Min Han (PhD, Molecular Medicine, Vaccinology), Cheng Wei Kang (MSc Molecular Medicine, research mode) and Asma’ Abdul Hadi (MSc Molecular Medicine, mixed mode).

In recognition of their accomplishments, each received an award certificate and gift from the Director, Associate Professor Dr Aziah Ismail at a virtual ceremony on 19 May 2021. Though the event did not have the usual frills of personal award presentations, audible applause, photography session and celebratory ‘makan’ after, the audience conveyed their enthusiasm and congratulations through emojis.

In their acceptance speeches, the awardees thanked their supervisors, colleagues and staff who contributed directly and indirectly to their success. In his acceptance speech, Lew Min Han conveyed a special thanks to his supervisor, Dr Tye Gee Jun, for his guidance and encouragement throughout his PhD programme. Lew said “Studying immunology is exciting yet challenging, for its intricate immune responses require in-depth comprehension. I am grateful to work with him to acquire independent thinking and critical problem-solving skills in vaccine development against infectious diseases.”

Cheng Wei Kang thanked his supervisors, Assoc. Prof. Dr Oon Chern Ein and Prof. Dr Gurjeet Kaur for their guidance, and his lab mates who encouraged him. He hopes to pursue his PhD overseas. Asma’ Abdul Hadi felt honoured to be given the award and expressed gratitude to her supervisor, Dr Norsyahida Binti Arifin. Asma also intends to continue her postgraduate studies soon.

INFORMM congratulates the recipients of this prestigious award and wishes them the very best in their future endeavours.
