Hazard in The Workplace (Biological & Chemical)

Hazardous substances occur in many forms in the labs and uncontrolled exposure to the substances can cause serious harm to the users. These hazardous substances can be gases, liquids or solids. Biological agents can be transmitted to the environment as vapours and dust from both liquid and solid substances, respectively.

Relevant legislation associated with these substances has been enforced by Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) under several regulations including Classification, Labelling and Safety data Sheet of Hazardous Chemicals (CLASS) and Use and Standard of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health (USECHH), in order to control the risks. Even though all these regulation can be viewed online for free, all users still need relevant training from a competent and professionally qualified person.

Accordingly, on 1 November 2018, a safety talk entitled “Hazard in The Workplace (Biological & Chemical)” was organized at INFORMM Kelantan. This talk was delivered by Mr. Mohd Nasrom Mohd Nawi, lecturer at the Occupational Safety and Health Program, School of Health Sciences, USM. A total of 8 staff and 6 postgraduate students have been participated in the talk. The two-hour talk was then continued by a question-and-answer session. It is hoped that the talks will improve the awareness of the lab users in handling of hazardous substances related to biological agents and chemicals.
