Field Trip to Boston Scientific Medical Devices (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
29th July 2022 – Industrial field trips have been a part of INFORMM’s academic programmes and aim to provide students an insight into the industry environment and operations as well as meeting industry experts. Unfortunately, the field trips were cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic. Excitingly, when the movement control order was lifted early this year, a field trip to Boston Scientific Medical Devices (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. at Industrial Park Batu Kawan could be organised. The field trip involved 28 postgraduate students, accompanied by INFORMM’s Deputy Director (Postgraduate) Prof Dr Gurjeet Kaur and MSc mixed-mode programme coordinator, Dr Norsyahida Arifin. At Boston Scientific, the students were welcomed by Mr Sayron Ruiz, (Engineering Director) and Ms Joyce Ong (Human Resources Director).
Boston Scientific was founded in USA in 1979, focusing on manufacturing medical devices used in interventional medical specialties. The facility in Batu Kawan Industrial Park is Boston Scientific’s 12th global manufacturing facility but is their first in Asia, where its construction is aimed at producing more affordable products for patients. In this facility, the company’s major products include Gastrointestinal Biopsy Forceps (biopsy of the upper gastrointestinal tract), MoXy™ Liquid-Cooled Fiber (treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia) and laser fibers (lithotripsy), Balloon Catheter Assembly (BCA), Next Generation Top Assembly (NGTA) used in angioplasty and Mustang for peripheral arterial disease.
The field trip was a success whereby Boston Scientific staff gave a briefing on the products and provided a guided tour of the manufacturing plant which included packaging floor, clean rooms, and laboratories such as the analytical chemistry, microbiology, and product development. The students also had a productive discussion with top management.
