Pre-conference Workshop for MDBD2019
Pre-conference Workshop for MDBD2019
Title : Advancing Your Research in Flow Cytometry
Venue : INFORMM, USM Main Campus, 11800 Minden, Penang
Date : 23rd – 24th of September 2019
“Advancing Your Research in Flow Cytometry” is a pre-conference workshop jointly organized by the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (USM), Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM), Straits Scientific Sdn. Bhd and Beckman Coulter in conjunction with the 4th International Conference in Molecular Diagnostics and Biomarker Discovery themed Antibody Technology. This workshop which is a non-profit workshop is also organized at a very low price of only RM200 in line with Universiti Sains Malayisa’s 50th Anniversary, marking the commitment of the university in giving back to the scientific community and contributing to the efforts of nation building.
This workshop consists of lectures and laboratory based modules on specific research and clinical topics utilising Flow Cytometry. The workshop was based on several key topics including the following:
- Basic of Flow Cytometry
- Immunophenotyping in a 6 color experiment
- Determination of Cell Cycle (PI & RNAse)
- Flowcytometery analysis of data utilising Kaluza
The workshop was attended by a total of 30 participants from all over Malaysia as well as several participants from Thailand and Indonesia in line with the conference’s international level of participants. During the 2 day workshop, we had several key speakers on Flow Cytometery from INFORMM’s Dr. Tye Gee Jun, Straits Scientific’s Ms. Hamizah and Ms Balbita as well as Beckman Coulter’s Ms Toh Xue Yun. The lecture sessions were conducted by all 4 speakers giving the participants an insight into the basis of Flow Cytometery and its applications. The hands-on lab on the other hand was conducted by Ms Toh Xue Yun. The hands-on which was half of the workshop allowed for the participants to try their hands on compensation in a multi-coloured experiment as well as generating data utilising the compensation matrix in a real life immunophenotyping of cells. A side from that, the participants were also exposed to the latest advances in nanoparticle analysis utilising Flow Cytometry. On the final session of the hands-on, participants were provided with a Flow Cytometry software trial which allowed them to conduct flow cytometry data analysis. The data that was obtained during the other hands-on session had allowed them to not only learn more about the techniques used in analysing flow cytometery results but also allowed them to be able to analyse data that were generated by themselves.
The workshop ended with a lucky draw which was sponsored by Beckman Coulter and Straits Scientific. There were 5 prizes of the Kaluza software, worth RM4000 each and were won by the participants at the end of the workshop. The organizers would like to thank the sponsors Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, Beckman Coulter and Straits Scientific Sdn. Bhd. for their kind involvement, making the workshop a success.
