Effective Public Speaking
Kubang Kerian – The Effective Public Speaking event was held on 22nd January 2019 at Dewan Persidangan, USM, Health Campus. The event was organised by postgraduate students of INFORMM, USM, Health Campus and co-organizer by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation, USM and the USM Health Campus Bilingual Toastmasters Club. The event aimed to provide participants with useful tips on effective public speaking methods.
Three panel speakers were invited to share tips and bits of advice on several major aspects of public speaking skills. The first speaker was Mr Syafiq Fadeli, a motivational speaker as well as a master trainer of PROTALK MALAYSIA who gave his speech on “Developing Self-confidence through a Successful Speech”. Next speaker was Miss Aishah Meor Zulkefli’auni, an English educator and the Head of Jawatankuasa Pengembangan Bahasa Inggeris at the School of Languages, Literacies & Translation, USM, Health Campus who gave her speech on “The Do’s & Don’ts in Public Speaking”. The final speaker was a distinguished toastmaster, Mr Ricky Soo who gave the final speech entitled “Impromptu Speech: Tips and Tricks”.
A total of 87 participants from multiple backgrounds (mostly USM staff and students) joined the event and the overall feedback received from participants was very positive. The pieces of advice accumulated from the content of the event can be integrated and applied by participants to increase public speaking skills and efficiency. Overall, the event can be repeated in the future to aid more participants in increasing their communication skills involving public speaking and impromptu speeches.
