Mammalian Antibody Expression System Workshop

8th November 2018, Kubang Kerian - Workshop on Mammalian Antibody Expression System was successfully conducted at INFORMM, USM Health Campus with the great support from Ministry of Education Malaysia for HICOE programme. The workshop was part of INFROMM’s initiatives to promote home-grown expertise, research, collaboration, research facilities and services. The speaker and guest speaker were Dr. Tye Gee Jun (INFORMM) and Mr. Choo Chee Wei from Bio-Diagnostics Malaysia, our proud collaborator and co-sponsor, respectively. The workshop had participants from both national insitutions as well as one from Indonesia who has expressed her desires to learn about the methods.
The workshop was a combination of seminars and hands-on sessions by the speakers covering multiple topics on the recombinant antibody for diagnostics and therapeutics, antibody expression systems and suspended mammalian cells for improved antibody expression. The integrated learning includes two hands-on sessions, which allowed the participants to try their hands at transfection of suspended mammalian cells for the production of antibodies as well as the antibody purification methods, which involves antibodies harvested from mammalian cells. The experience that was obtained during the hands-on has allowed for the participant to experience first hand these methods in hope that they will be able to start conducting their own research based on the methods learnt. The participants were also allowed to bring the harvest of their labour in the lab back to their respective laboratories in order to further practice other methods which were also thought during the course of the workshop.
All in all, the workshop was very successful and we hope to be able to conduct a future continuation of the workshop to further boost the research capacities of more participants with the methodology that was developed under the HICoE programme.
