INFORMM's Second MDBD Conference

INFORMM's Second International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics & Biomarker Discovery (MDBD 2017) chaired by INFORMM's Director Professor Rahmah Noordin was held on 3-4 May 2017 at Hotel Equatorial Penang. The conference met its objectives to share advances in the fields of molecular diagnostics and biomarker discovery, to strengthen INFORMM’s position as a national centre of excellence for diagnostics, to establish its name regionally and internationally, and to foster collaborations and networking among the participants of the conference. Two international keynote speakers and ten plenary speakers delivered various talks on topics such as cost effective point-of-need diagnostics and advanced nanosystems for diagnostic applications. A total of 116 partcipants (from 50 different institutions locally and abroad) attended the conference and 16 companies displayed their products and services in the exhibition. There were 36 poster presenters and 45 oral presenters. MDBD 2017 was made possible by our Platinum sponsors Merck Malaysia and Bio-Rad Laboratories Singapore Pte Ltd (together with Canvio Sdn Bhd), and Silver sponsor Zensor R&D Corp (Taiwan). The conference also saw the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between INFORMM and NovaTec Immundiagnostica GmbH, Germany to strengthen research collaborations and to allow for staff training exchange between both parties.

A pre-conference workshop on 'Microfluidics & Biosensor Technology' was co-organised with BIODOT and Collaborative Microelectronic Design Excellence Centre (CEDEC), USM and was held at INFORMM on 2 May 2017. A total of 30 local and regional partipants attended the workshop. Six specialists covered seven lectures on topics such as biosensor engineering and protein and nucleic acid biosensors.
