In a nutshell, the programme was an astounding success, as positive feedback was gathered from the participants. Science Made Fun will continue to be an annual programme to support the STEM initiatives by the Malaysian government by focusing on many more future aspects in biomedical and health sciences, targeting students from all around Malaysia. Science Made Fun is a collaboration program between the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Kota Bharu aims to support the STEM initiatives by the Malaysian government among school children in Kelantan. However, this year, with the global COVID-19 pandemic situation, the program was designed and made online utilizing the benefit of social media in raising awareness of the dangers of infectious diseases and the preventive measures that need to be taken to break the COVID-19 chain. Specifically, this year’s program aimed to instil awareness on the dangers of infectious diseases to the hearts and minds of primary and secondary school students not only in Kelantan but all over Malaysia with a special theme of ‘Kesedaran Penyakit Berjangkit Di kalangan Pelajar’.
The programme was held through the online platform Webex, INFORMM Facebook Live and USTP PPD Kota Bharu YouTube Live. An astounding 4500 primary and secondary school students from 403 schools around Malaysia joined the program whilst the YouTube Live of Science Made Fun 2021 ended up with a staggering more than 12 000 total views. Science Made Fun 2021 were led by the directors, Cik Nur Amira Binti Khairil Anwar, an active MSc student at INFORMM and also Pn Hjh Maimun Binti Mat Saleh, SISC+ Matematik & Sains from PPD Kota Bharu, handled by a total of 22 dedicated committees from INFORMM and 9 experienced representatives from PPD Kota Bharu.
Among the engaging activities were talks by expert lecturers from USM followed by a Question and Answer (Q&A) session at the end of the programme. Short yet informative talks focusing on food and waterborne diseases given by Dr Noor Izani Noor Jamil from School of Health Sciences, vector borne diseases given by Dr Khairul Mohd Fadzli Mustaffa from Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine, airborne diseases given by Associate Professor Dr. Azian Harun from School of Medical Sciences and vaccination of COVID-19 given by Dr. Maryam Azlan from School of Health Sciences.
