INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN MOLECULAR MEDICINE

Trainings and workshop v2

  • Lateral Flow and Biosensor Technologies

    3-5 Oct 2023

The workshop provides participants with comprehensive principles, applications, and advances of the two diagnostic platforms, lateral flow and biosensor.

  • Real-time PCR gene expression analysis clinic

    11 Oct 2023

This clinic offers a step-by-step process for real-time PCR gene expression analysis simply using Microsoft Excel!

  • SELEX Technologies Workshop (Series V)

    16-18 Oct 2023

The workshop provides an overview of what's latest in SELEX technology and its potential applications.

At INFORMM, we offer training and workshops related to molecular medicine research. These workshops are specifically designed as a sharing platform for researchers, students, and others.

Upcoming workshop

Starting 2023, two of INFORMM training are HRDF claimable - Lateral Flow & Biosensor Technologies and SELEX Technologies. More HRDF claimable training will be announced soon.

INFORMM is Malaysia's earliest Higher Institution Centers of Excellence (HICoE)

  • What is Higher Institution Centers of Excellence (HICoE)?

The Higher Institution Centers of Excellence (HICoE) program is a program of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) implemented by the Department of Higher Education (DOHE) to drive research excellence HEI in in the field of nic research. Through this program, DOHE gives a HICoE rating to HEI Centers Of Excellence (COE) that perform well in the field of nic research. The HICoE rating provides incentives in the form of research grants to COEs to strengthen the research capabilities of the nic field to be elevated to a higher level.

  • What are HICoE expectation on INFORMM?

HICoE needs to prepare an Action Plan and Roadmap that details the planning of programs and projects that can boost HICoE's excellence. The progress of HICoE performance is monitored by JPT through the Key Performance Index (KPI) set on HICoE in the Action Plan and Roadmap. HICoE is required to submit performance performance reports in accordance with the monitoring period set by the Department of Higher Education (DOHE). The performance determined through the monitoring will be used by DOHE as the basis for the distribution of HICoE research funds.

  • What are INFORMM's achievements after HICoE?

    • Establishment of Lateral Flow and Facilities for diagnostics (2010-2014).

    • Establishment of Phage Display for diagnostics (2016-2019).

    • Establishment of Aptamer Development Facilities for diagnostics (2020-present).

ABOUT HICOE

diagnostics

  • The demand for new and more versatile diagnostics is increasing due to the knowledge expansion on biomarkers and their roles in diseases. Fulfilling this changing need for diagnostics - medical device technology is INFORMM's major focus which entails lateral flow assay (LFA) and biosensors.

  • Recent advances in chemistry and biotechnology have allowed the expansion of innovative new designs of tools and reagents for diagnostics. INFORMM has a group of researchers who are passionate about contributing to this area of diagnostics.

therapy and novel therapeutics

  • Therapeutic antibodies represent an important class of newly introduced drugs and have been particularly successful in cancer therapy and the treatment of inflammatory diseases. We have a working group at INFORMM developing antibodies in combating diseases.

  • Aptamers are short sequences of artificial DNA, RNA, XNA, or peptides that bind a specific target molecule or family of target molecules sometimes classified as chemical antibodies. We have a group at INFORMM actively isolating aptamers and investigating their effect on parasitic diseases and cancer.

  • Natural products have long been studied for their medicinal properties on human health. At INFORMM, we have working groups on natural products as anti-cancer and as health supplements. We also used computational analysis to predict natural product properties.

  • Various technological strategies have been implemented for the development of vaccines, both prophylactic and therapeutic. Our group at INFORMM is currently exploring both strategies in combating infectious and non-communicable diseases.

  • Inhibitors are central to targeted cancer therapy, aiming to selectively attack cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. Our research develops targeted cancer inhibitors and combination therapies to overcome drug resistance. Current projects include BZD9L1 for sensitizing colorectal cancer cells and recombinant topoisomerase I production in Pichia pastoris to screen natural product–based inhibitors, aiming to enhance treatment precision while minimizing harm to healthy tissue.
