sustainability awards 2025

22 December 2025 – The Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) (Main Campus), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), proudly celebrated its achievement of 1st place for Sustainability Excellence at the Green Office Rating Ceremony 2025.

This marks the second consecutive year that USM has actively advocated the Green Office initiative. In 2024, INFORMM was awarded the prestigious “5 Leaves” recognition, a symbol of excellence in sustainable office practices. That milestone reflected INFORMM’s strong commitment to eco-friendly operations. However, the 2025 award represents the highlight of its sustainability journey — securing the top position among USM entities for the very first time.

The ceremony, organized by the Division of Industry and Community Network (BJIM) through the Kampus Sejahtera initiative, aimed to recognize the commitment and achievements of USM’s Responsibility Centres (PTJ) in implementing green practices. It also sought to mainstream sustainability into the university’s governance and daily operations.

The event was officiated by USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, who underscored the importance of embedding sustainability into every aspect of university life.

INFORMM’s outstanding performance demonstrates how research institutes can balance cutting-edge biomedical science with ecological responsibility. Through initiatives such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmentally responsible laboratory practices, INFORMM has set a benchmark for sustainability excellence within USM.

This milestone not only strengthens INFORMM’s reputation but also reinforces USM’s role as a pioneer in higher education sustainability in Malaysia. By combining recognition of green practices with continuous advocacy, USM and INFORMM are setting benchmarks for integrating sustainability into academia and research.

rcms informm 2025

Penang, 17 December 2025 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) proudly announces the successful certification of four of its key entities under the Responsible Care® Management System (RCMS). By October 2025, INFORMM main campus, and the INFORMM Health Campus, the School of Chemical Engineering, and the School of Chemical Sciences, each met the rigorous certification requirements, demonstrating USM’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and responsible stewardship.

INFORMM (Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine) was instrumental in this achievement. Both its main campus and Health Campus showcased excellence in implementing RCMS principles, particularly in laboratory safety, environmental protection, and community awareness. INFORMM’s leadership in aligning biomedical research with Responsible Care® standards highlights the institute’s dedication to advancing science responsibly.

The certification process involved comprehensive assessments, including documentation review, self-assessment, internal audits, and site verification. INFORMM’s proactive engagement ensured that both campuses met requirements within the stipulated timeline, setting a benchmark for other research institutes in Malaysia.
