INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN MOLECULAR MEDICINE

INFORMM Kelantan, 16 Oct 2025 — A total of 123 students and 18 teachers from Sekolah Al-Amin Tropicana, Kota Bharu, took part in an educational visit to the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Health Campus under the BrainBuzz!@USM Health Campus programme. The half-day event, jointly organised by the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) and the School of Medical Sciences (PPSP), USM, aimed to spark curiosity and nurture interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among school students.

The programme, held from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., opened with welcoming remarks by Dr. Nik Yusnoraini Yusof, Senior Lecturer at INFORMM, representing INFORMM Director Associate Professor Dr. Aziah Ismail. This was followed by an engaging health talk by Dr. Ahmad Mu’az Kamalulsahar, Medical Officer at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia, who emphasized the importance of health awareness and adopting healthy lifestyle practices from a young age. A briefing on the programme’s objectives and activities was also delivered by Mr. Muhammad Fazli Khalid, Research Officer at INFORMM.

The highlight of the day was the interactive BrainBuzz! activities, conducted at the An-NaHL Laboratory and the INFORMM Laboratory. Students enthusiastically participated in hands-on science demonstrations, exploring the fundamentals of molecular medicine, diagnostics, and biotechnological innovations. These activities provided a unique opportunity for students to experience science beyond the classroom, fostering excitement and deeper understanding of biomedical research.

“BrainBuzz!@USM Health Campus is designed to make science fun, accessible, and inspiring. By engaging students in real laboratory experiences, we hope to ignite their passion for discovery and innovation,” said Dr. Nik Yusnoraini.

The programme reflects USM’s ongoing commitment to STEM outreach and youth engagement, ensuring that the next generation of scientists and innovators are motivated through enjoyable, experience-based learning approaches. INFORMM and PPSP continue to champion initiatives that connect schools with cutting-edge research environments, strengthening the bridge between education and scientific advancement.
