Dr Eugene Ong Boon Beng
Dr. Eugene Ong Boon Beng is a Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator at the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He serves as the Deputy Director (Postgraduate & International) at INFORMM and is the USM Coordinator for the USM-RIKEN International Centre for Ageing Science (URICAS). He holds a PhD in Chemical Biology from RIKEN, Japan (2011) and an MSc from USM. His research utilizes yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a powerful eukaryotic model to unravel the mechanisms of bacterial virulence factors and the biology of aging. His work includes identifying tropical plant extracts with anti-aging properties and developing rapid diagnostic tests for infectious diseases, most notably a lateral flow immunoassay for Typhoid fever using the recombinant HlyE antigen.
