INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN MOLECULAR MEDICINE

PENANG, 29 April 2026 – The Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has officially entered strategic discussions with global science leader Thermo Fisher Scientific. This collaboration aims to elevate the International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics and Biomarker Discovery (MDBD) 2026 into a premier global stage for diagnostic innovation.

The high-level meeting featured key leadership from both organizations, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aziah Ismail (Director of INFORMM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Venugopal Balakrishnan (Deputy Director), and members of the MDBD organizing committee. Representing Thermo Fisher Scientific were Ms. Imelia Wong (Country Manager) and Dr. Andrian Yeo Eng Hwa (Head of Bioscience Division), signaling a significant commitment from the industry giant to Malaysia’s scientific landscape.

Bridging the Lab and the Market

Tentatively scheduled for 19–20 August 2026, MDBD 2026 is designed to be more than a traditional academic gathering. The partnership focuses on a "sustainable partnership model" that integrates Thermo Scientific’s advanced instrumentation and technical expertise directly into the research ecosystem.

"MDBD 2026 will serve as a strategic launchpad for long-term collaboration," stated the committee, emphasizing INFORMM’s prestige as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in Diagnostics Platforms.

Hands-On Innovation

A standout feature of the upcoming conference will be its focus on practical and reproducible outcomes. The proposed program includes:

  • Next-Gen Workshops: Hands-on training in emerging technologies, including CRISPR and antibody-based platforms.

  • Live Demonstrations: Direct exposure to cutting-edge diagnostic solutions and high-end instrumentation provided by Thermo Scientific.

  • Translational Forum: A dedicated platform for industry-led technical sessions aimed at bridging the gap between basic research and clinical application.

A Vision for Malaysia’s Diagnostic Future

The discussion also finalized operational strategies for speaker selection, global marketing, and the production of technical outputs such as scientific bulletins and publication materials. By combining USM’s academic rigor with Thermo Scientific’s industrial prowess, the partnership aims to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional hub for biomarker discovery.

The session concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to delivering a high-impact, industry-engaged conference that builds lasting networks and advances the frontiers of molecular medicine.
